Governor Roy Cooper appointed Machelle Sanders secretary of the N.C. Department of Administration on January 12, 2017.

As Administration secretary, Sanders oversees the state agency whose mission is to provide high-quality services effectively, efficiently and economically to its customers: the citizens, agencies and communities of North Carolina. The department is committed to quality, service, excellence, transparency and integrity. 

The department oversees operations such as building construction, purchasing and contracting for good and services, facilities maintenance, management of state vehicles, and acquiring and disposing of real property. It also oversees the operation of auxiliary services such as courier mail delivery and the sale of state and federal surplus property. In addition to its role as a service provider to other state agencies, the department provides staff support to several councils and commissions which advocate for the special needs of North Carolina’s citizens.

Sanders brings to the Cooper administration experience in both management and leadership roles. She is a seasoned pharmaceutical and biotechnology executive recognized for her general management leadership, diverse operations management skills and quality assurance expertise.

Sanders previously held the role of vice president of manufacturing and general manager of Biogen’s largest and most advanced manufacturing facilities in Research Triangle Park (RTP), North Carolina. Prior to that, she held leadership positions overseeing manufacturing, global quality assurance and quality control functions at Biogen, Purdue Pharmaceuticals and Diosynth-Akzo Nobel.

Sanders holds a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from North Carolina State University and a Master of Health Administration from Pfeiffer University.
