Flag Alert: Lowering of North Carolina Flags in Tribute to Maintenance Mechanic Geoffrey Howe

Raleigh, NC
Nov 3, 2017

Gov. Roy Cooper today ordered all North Carolina state flags to be lowered to half-staff on Friday, November 3rd, from sunrise to Monday, November 6th at sunset, in tribute to the Department of Public Safety employee, Geoffrey Howe. He passed on Thursday after suffering multiple injuries while working at Pasquotank Correctional Institution on Thursday, October 12th.

Howe began his career at Pasquotank Correctional Institute just over a year ago, as a maintenance mechanic.

“Geoffrey Howe was a valued member of his community and his workplace and he will be greatly missed. We send our heartfelt sympathies to his loved ones and wish for them comfort during this difficult time. We owe it to Geoffrey and his fallen coworkers to do all we can to keep an attack like the one that claimed their lives from ever happening inside our prisons again, and that’s what I’ve directed prison leaders to do."

“Our thoughts, prayers and condolences go out to the Howe family,” said Department of Public Safety Secretary Erik A. Hooks. “This tragedy has horribly impacted the lives of four families, as well as co-workers and friends.”

Flags should remain at half-staff until sunset on Monday, November 6th.
