DOA Secretary Machelle Sanders Comments on New Status of Women in NC Fact Sheet

Raleigh, NC
Mar 28, 2018

Institute for Women’s Policy Research (IWPR) today released fact sheets on the economic status of women in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. To download North Carolina’s fact sheet, visit IWPR’s interactive Status of Women in the States website at statusofwomendata.org .

Statement from Secretary Machelle Sanders on the research:

“Women in North Carolina have made considerable advances in recent years, but still face inequities that often prevent them from reaching their full potential. Since the 2004 Status of Women in the States report was published, the gender gap in North Carolina has narrowed and a higher percentage of women have bachelor’s degrees, yet, a larger share of women live in poverty.

North Carolina has risen from the worst third in the nation to the middle third for both women’s employment and earnings, and poverty and opportunity.

The fact sheet released today is a preview of more extensive data with the full report on “The Status of Women in North Carolina – Employment & Earnings” to be released in May. That report will include policy recommendations to help address areas of need in North Carolina.”
