What is Domestic Violence?

Domestic violence is a pattern of abusive and controlling behaviors that a person uses against an intimate or former partner which may include the following:

  • Physical Abuse: Pushing, shoving, hitting, kicking, burning, strangulation (use of the hands on the neck to restrict blood flow or breathing), use of a weapon or other object to cause injury; restraining, use of the body to shove or push the victim
  • Sexual Violence: Forcing or coercing unwanted sexual acts, refusing to practice safer sex, treating a partner like a sex object.
  • Emotional Abuse/Intimidation: Name calling, put downs; denying or shifting blame; treating a partner as an inferior; threatening to harm others/self or to reveal information that might be harmful; using threatening looks, actions, or gestures.
  • Economic Abuse: destroying property; denying money for food, personal hygiene items, basic needs or medical care; interfering with a partners school or job; causing hardships with the intent of causing job loss
  • Stalking: Monitoring phone calls, emails, activities and tracking whereabouts by electronic means; following a partner or questioning others about the partner’s activities and/or whereabouts, often without the partner’s knowledge.
