Governor Roy Cooper ordered all U.S. and North Carolina flags at state facilities to half-staff from sunrise to sunset on Tuesday, December 19 in honor of former U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, who passed away on Friday, December 1. Appointed by President Ronald Reagan in 1981, O'Connor was the first woman to serve on the U.S. Supreme Court, a position she held until her retirement in 2006.

O'Connor will lie in repose today at the Great Hall of the Supreme Court followed by a private funeral on Tuesday, December 19 at the Washington National Cathedral.
